Q: Business has slowed down over the past few months, and I've begun to cut back on some of my costs, including marketing. What are some inexpensive ways I can promote my business online? -- Richard Q.A: You are not alone, Richard, and I'm sure you know that. We have all been cutting back on expenses; however, marketing shouldn't be one of the expenses you cut! But, if you must, then replenish some of your traditional marketing with a few online marketing strategies. Not only is it inexpensive -- it's free! The only cost is a little bit of your time. 1. Social MediaNo surprise here. Social networking is an excellent way to increase the visibility of your business online. When done right, social networking will allow you to make connections with people you might not normally have met, gain leads and convert them into customers. Consider blogging and getting an account on Facebook to get yourself started. 2. Free ClassifiedsUse free classified ad services to promote your product or service. Check out the big online classified ad sites such as Craigslist or SuperPages.com. 3. Write a Press ReleaseWrite your own press release and submit it to any of the free online press-release services available. Some do charge for the service, but it is generally a small fee (pr.com, 24-7pressrelease.com). If what you're doing is particularly newsworthy, send it to your local newspaper and radio and TV stations as well. 4. Article MarketingWrite an article related to your product or service and submit it to eZineArticles.com. Be helpful, informative and perhaps a bit entertaining. This will help to establish yourself as an expert in your field. 5. Maximize Your Mailing ListI'm sure you've been collecting e-mails. As long as your e-mail list is permission-based, use your mailing list to send e-blasts filled with information about new products and services. Think about giving your loyal customers a special gift for continuing their support and offer your prospective customers a great deal if they buy from you. 6. Reciprocity AdvertisingAlthough not an online solution, I'm throwing it in any way. Talk to other business owners who might be strategic business partners for you and explore cross-promotion. They are probably in the same boat as you and would be willing to work out a "scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" referral system. It never hurts to ask for referrals. Richard, I hope this has given you some alternative ideas for marketing your business. In this economy, we should not shut any doors, and the Internet doors are wide open right now. Think of this as well: If you are not marketing online, you can be sure your competition is!
